In these circumstances I took from Dr. Hunter a solemn promise in the presence of Mr. May and Dr. Atkinson that he would totally abstain from alcohol. I informed him that I should report the case for your information but that I should not in this instance take steps for his suspension. In the event of his breaking his promise he knows that he is to expect no further clemency.
5.
Dr. Hunter's appointment is, in accordance with the terms of Mr. H. Bertram Cox's letter of the 11th November, 1901, sent to Sir Henry Blake in Mr. Chamberlain's Despatch No. 410 dated the 6th December, 1901, for a term of not more than five years from the date of his arrival in the Colony. This date was the 27th February, 1902.
